Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Brian Orelli]

Health insurers such as Universal American (NYSE: UAM  ) and Humana (NYSE: HUM  ) that offer supplementary Medicare insurance could be hurt if seniors decided to drop the added coverage, but I doubt the increased premiums will put a major dent in seniors' bu! dgets. Re! tirees making more than $85,000 per year will have to pay about $250 more per year than they do right now. Any losses will be more than be made up for by theCenters for Medicare and Medicaid Services' decision this month to reverse its previously announced cuts to reimbursement rates.

Top Gold Stocks To Buy Right Now

Top Gold Stocks To Buy Right Now: Iamgold Corporation(IAG)

IAMGOLD Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, development, and production of mineral resource properties worldwide. It primarily explores for gold, silver, zinc, copper, niobium, diamonds, and other metals. The company holds interests in eight operating gold mines, a niobium producer, a diamond royalty, and exploration and development projects located in Africa and the Americas. Its advanced exploration and development projects include the Westwood project in Canada; and the Quimsacocha project, which consists of 3 mining concessions covering an aggregate area of approximately 8,030 hectares in Ecuador. The company was formerly known as IAMGOLD International African Mining Gold Corporation and changed its name to IAMGOLD Corporation in June 1997. IAMGOLD Corporation was founded in 1990 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Blair]

IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.

As a result, Chidley and team upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) andYamana Gold (AUY) to Neutral from Underweight, and raised Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Iamgold (IAG) to Overweight from Neutral.Gold Fields (GFI) was downgraded “due to increased risk and also reduced expectations for the South Deep operation,” Chidley says.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  )
Canadian gold miner IAMGOLD pays a semiannual dividend of $0.125 per share, which equates to a current yield of about 4.45%. As the company's name would imply, it! s revenues are generated by its gold-mining operations. Currently, the company has six gold mines across three continents as well as several potential projects in the works. The company's current priorities given the slumping gold market include cash preservation, cost reduction, and disciplined capital allocation. While the dividend looks safe for now, given the company's stated policy of not jeopardizing is strong balance sheet, it could be reduced if gold prices fall further.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's rapidly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Castle Brands (ROX), which develops and markets premium and super-premium brands in the beverage alcohol categories: rum, whiskey, liqueurs, vodka, tequila and fine wine. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up huge by 234%.

If you take a look at the chart for Castle Brands, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending very strong for the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of 30 cents per share to its recent high of 99 cents per share. During that uptrend, shares of ROX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of ROX within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ROX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at 93 cents per share to its 52-week high at 99 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 501,958 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ROX will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $1.50 to $2 a share.

Traders can look to buy ROX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at 80 cents to 77 cents per share, or around its 50-day at 70 cents per share. One can also buy ROX off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Ingredion Incorporated (Ingredion), formerly Corn Products International, Inc., incorporated on March 27, 1997, is a global manufacturer and supplier of starch and sweetener ingredients to a range of industries, including packaged food, beverage, brewing and industrial customers. The Company's product line includes starches and sweeteners, animal feed products and edible corn oil.

The Company's starch-based products include both food-grade and industrial starches. The Company's sweetener products include glucose syrups, high maltose syrups, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), caramel color, dextrose, polyols, maltodextrins and glucose and syrup solids. The Company's products are derived primarily from the processing of corn and other starch-based materials, such as tapioca, potato and rice.

Sweetener Products

The Company's sweetener products represented approximately 44% of the Company's net sales for the year ended December 31, 2012. Glucose syrups are fundamental ingredients used in food products, such as baked goods, snack foods, beverages, canned fruits, condiments, candy and other sweets, dairy products, ice cream, jams and jellies, prepared mixes and table syrups. Glucose syrups offer functionality in addition to sweetness to processed foods. High Maltose Syrup is special type of glucose syrup, which is primarily used as a fermentable sugar in brewing beers. High maltose syrups are also used in the production of confections, canning and some other food processing applications. The Company's high maltose syrups actually speeds the fermentation process, allowing brewers to increase capacity without adding capital.

High fructose corn syrup is used in a variety of consumer products, including soft drinks, fruit-flavored beverages, baked goods, dairy products, confections and other food and beverage products. In addition to sweetness and ease of use, high fructose corn syrup provides body, humectancy and aids in browning, freezing point and crystalliza! tion control.

Dextrose has a range of applications in the food and confection industries, in solutions for intravenous and other pharmaceutical applications, and numerous industrial applications like wallboard, biodegradable surface agents and moisture control agents. Dextrose functionality in foods, beverages and confectionary includes sweetness control; body and viscosity; acts as a bulking, drying and anti-caking agent; serves as a carrier; provides freezing point and crystallization control; and aids in fermentation. Dextrose is also a fermentation agent in the production of light beer. In pharmaceutical applications dextrose is used in IV solutions as well as an excipient suitable for direct compression in tableting.

Polyols products are sugar-free, reduced calorie sweeteners primarily derived from starch or sugar for the food, beverage, confectionery, industrial, personal and oral care, and nutritional supplement markets. In addition to sweetness, polyols inhibit crystallization; provide binding, humectancy and plasticity; add texture; extend shelf life; prevent moisture migration, and are an excipient suitable for tableting.

Maltodextrins and Glucose Syrup Solids products have a multitude of food applications, including formulations where liquid syrups cannot be used. Maltodextrins are resistant to browning, provide solubility, have a low hydroscopicity (do not retain moisture), and are ideal for their carrier/bulking properties. Glucose syrup solids have a bland flavor, remain clear in solution are easy to handle and provide bulking properties.

Starch Products

The Company's starch products represented approximately 37 % of the Company's net sales for 2012. Starches are an important component in a range of processed foods, where they are used for adhesions, clouding, dusting, expansion, fat replacement, freshness, gelling, glazing, mouth feel, stabilization and texture. Starches are also used in paper production to create a smooth s! urface fo! r printed communications and to improve strength in recycled papers. Specialty starches are used for enhanced drainage, fiber retention, oil and grease resistance, improved printability and biochemical oxygen demand control. Industrial starches are used in the production of construction materials, textiles, adhesives, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, as well as in mining, water filtration and oil and gas drilling. Specialty starches are used for biomaterial applications including biodegradable plastics, fabric softeners and detergents, hair and skin care applications, dusting powders for surgical gloves and in the production of glass fiber and insulation.

This Oil Opportunity Is Triple the Size of the Bakken

Investors searching for the best stocks to buy now often look toward the shale oil boom and, in particular, at key finds such as the Bakken formation in North Dakota or the Permian Basin in west Texas.

But a fresh development in the Permian Basin has made the U.S. oil industry take notice - and that's not easy given the dramatic shale oil finds across the country.

In fact, the U.S. Geological Survey called this find the largest discovery in the last 50 years in the Permian Basin.

I'm talking about the Cline Shale.

Dr. M. Ray Perryman, head of the economic analysis firm The Perryman Group, told Rigzone "The information coming out on the Cline shale indicates up to 30 billion barrels of recoverable oil, which is substantially larger than other large plays."

To get an idea of what this means, consider that the Eagle Ford in Texas is believed to have approximately 10 billion barrels of recoverable oil and the Bakken 11 billion barrels.

That means the Cline Shale has at least three times the amount of recoverable oil as two of the biggest shale oil finds in the United States.

Clearly, if you're looking for the best energy stocks to buy now based on the shale oil boom, you need to find out as much as you can about the Cline Shale.

Where the Cline Shale Fits In

Texas has a number of overlapping oil fields, and the Cline Shale happens to be one of them.

And it's a really, really big one.

The 1.6 million-acre formation lies over a large area on the eastern shelf of the Permian Basin, running about 9,000 feet underneath a 10-county swath of Texas. It averages about 70 miles wide from east to west and roughly 140 miles wide from north to south.

The key target zone for oil production is between 200 and 500 feet thick. The Cline is also known as the Lower Wolfcamp because some of it lies beneath the already-known Wolfcamp shale formation to the west.

That means a few fortunate companies can drill wells with stopping points in both shale formations.

Meanwhile, the potential of the Cline Shale could exceed even the impressive estimate of 30 billion barrels of recoverable oil.

Oil companies like Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE: DVN) have only just begun to drill in this formation.

"We've had some encouraging results in the Cline, and we are hopeful and optimistic about our prospects for being successful in this play," Devon spokesperson Chip Minty told the Texas Tribune.

The company hasn't made a lot of noise about its results so far because it is so early in the Cline's development. In total, fewer than 100 wells have been drilled to date in the Cline Shale.

But some of those wells have already produced 400 to 800 barrels per day of oil equivalent with 60% to 75% oil production. That's just a hint of the extraordinary potential that the Cline Shale holds, both for the oil industry and investors.

The Best Stocks to Buy Now in the Cline Shale

To find the best energy stocks to buy to capitalize on the black gold that's just starting to flow out of the Cline Shale, one need only look at the companies that got there first...

Of course, there's Devon Energy, which drilled many of the early wells.

Other companies already drilling in the Cline include Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA), Gulfport Energy Corp. (Nasdaq: GPOR), and another pioneer in the region, Laredo Petroleum Holdings Inc. (NYSE: LPI).

Laredo's founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Randy Foutch, has hinted that the Cline Shale could end up being one of the most profitable shale formations in the United States.

"We believe the Cline shale exhibits similar petrophysical attributes and favorable economics compared to other liquids-rich shale plays, such as in the Eagle Ford and Bakken shale formations," Foutch told the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Explorer magazine last year.

Another company with drilling operations in the Cline as well as nearby, Breitling Oil & Gas, has planned an initial public offering for late this year or early in 2014.

"We are in a hotbed area with great infrastructure from legacy conventional plays, we have access to a talent pool for workers and equipment is already in the area," Breitling CEO Chris Faulkner told Rigzone.

But as optimistic as this seems, the Cline Shale picture could get even brighter. As more wells are drilled in the Cline Shale, it is very likely that the estimates of the amount of recoverable oil will keep rising. That's just what happened with the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale formations.

This exceptionally promising location virtually guarantees success for the companies drilling in the Cline, making them the best energy stocks to buy to take advantage of this new shale oil play.

Note: The profits from the next stage of the shale oil boom could dwarf the initial windfalls, according to Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors. The key to finding the best stocks to buy in the next wave of the boom, Dr. Moors says, is technology...

Make Your Retirement Money Last

Jane Bennett Clark, of Kiplinger's Personal Finance, offers several strategies designed to help your investments provide the income you need throughout your retirement years.

Steve Halpern: We're here today with Jane Bennett Clark of Kiplinger's Personal Finance. Thanks for joining us today, Jane.

Jane Bennett Clark: Thanks for having me.

Steve Halpern: You wrote the cover story for the new issue of Kiplinger's; it just hit the newsstands. Your article's called "Making Your Money Last." I can't think of anything more important to those who are nearing retirement.

Jane Bennett Clark: That is absolutely true. Considering today's life expectancy, you could easily live another 25 to 30 years after you retire, so it's up to you to save as much as you can, and to figure out how to make your savings last over several decades.

Steve Halpern: Well, while many investors who are beginning to focus on retirement are thinking about fixed income investing, you say that the number one role, to make your money last through retirement, is to not dump stocks. Could you expand on that?

Jane Bennett Clark: Absolutely. You know, with longer life expectancies, again, you'll need to generate some growth in order to keep up with, and beat, inflation over many years; otherwise you'll actually lose buying power as you age.

The general guideline is to keep about 60% in stocks and 40% in fixed income investments at the beginning of your retirement.

Then, if you're on the conservative side, you might go with, maybe, 30% in stocks and 70% in fixed income, or if you're more aggressive, you might reverse the mix to 70/30. You don't want to get out of stocks altogether.

Steve Halpern: And how do those investing guidelines change as one gets older and moves further down the road into their retirement years?

Jane Bennett Clark: Sure, you know, you want to gradually adjust the mix, so that it becomes more conservative as you get further into retirement and have less time to recover from a market downturn.

From that 60/40 you might move to maybe 70 or 80% in cash and fixed investments as you age, and 30 or 20% in stocks. Again, very few people get out of stocks altogether. That would be a really conservative strategy.

Steve Halpern: Now, one investment vehicle that you highlight in your article is called Target Date funds. Could you explain what those are and how they should play a role in one's retirement plan?

Jane Bennett Clark: Right. Well, you know, rather than adjust the mix yourself as you head into and through retirement, you can invest in a Target Date fund, which will adjust the mix for you. What it does is, it gradually moves your investments from stocks to bonds and short-term funds as you move through retirement.

One thing you have to be aware of is that Target Date funds have different asset mixes and different timetables for adjusting your investment. You should make sure that you know and understand what you're getting when you choose a Target Date fund.

Steve Halpern: Now, are Target Date Funds a difficult investment, or is that something that somebody could get through any of the major mutual fund companies?

Jane Bennett Clark: Oh, sure, yeah. You can pick them up in any of the major companies, and they are a very common investment.

Steve Halpern: What other strategy should investors consider to make their income last?

Jane Bennett Clark: Well, one sort of classic strategy is to live off the interest and dividends that are generated by your investments and preserve the principal, but with fixed interest rates, you would really need a lot of money to be able to generate enough income to be able to live comfortably.

Another strategy, which is also somewhat time-honored, is to take 4% of your total portfolio in the first year of retirement and increase the amount each year by the rate of inflation.

If the stock market tanks in a particular year, you could take a little less than 4%, or if your investments are doing really well, you could take more. The point is to adjust your withdrawals as circumstances dictate.

Another strategy is to calculate your withdrawals based on the actuarial tables the IRS uses for required minimum distributions, which is something you would have to do anyway from your tax-deferred accounts when you're 70 and a half.

Another strategy is to invest enough money in liquid conservative investments to cover several years' worth of basic costs, and then you can leave the rest invested more aggressively to generate growth. There are a number of ways to do this, but the point is, save as much as you can and then be strategic about how you use that money in retirement.

Steve Halpern: Well, thank you for joining us today. We appreciate your insights.

Jane Bennett Clark: Thanks for having me.

What shopping will look like in the future

NEW YORK (AP) — When it comes to shopping, more Americans are skipping the stores and pulling out their smartphones and tablets. Still, there's more on the horizon for shopping than just point-and-clicking.

No one thinks physical stores are going away permanently. But because of the frenetic pace of advances in technology and online shopping, the stores that remain will likely offer amenities and services that are more about experiences and less about selling a product. Think: Apple stores.

Among the things industry watchers are envisioning are holograms in dressing rooms that will allow shoppers to try on clothes without getting undressed. Their homes will be equipped with smart technology that will order light bulbs before they go dark. And they'll be able to print out a full version of coffee cups and other products using 3-D technology in stores.

"Physical shopping will become a lot more fun because it's going to have to be," retail futurist Doug Stephens says.

More services

Forrester analyst Sucharita Mulpuru says stores of the future will be more about services, like day care, veterinary services and beauty services. Services that connect online and offline shopping could increase as well, with more drive-thru pickup and order-online, pick-up-in-store services. Checkout also will be self-service or with cashiers using computer tablets.

Some stores are taking self-service further: A store in Seattle called Hointer displays clothing not in piles or on racks but as one piece hanging at a time, like a gallery.

Shoppers just touch their smartphones to a coded tag on the item and then select a color and size on their phone. Technology in the store keeps track of the items, and by the time a shopper is ready to try them on, they're already at the dressing room.

If the shopper doesn't like an item, he tosses it down a chute, which automatically removes the item from the shopper's online shopping cart. The shopper keeps the items that he or she wants, which ! are purchased automatically when leaving the store, no checkout involved.

Nadia Shouraboura, Hointer's CEO, says once shoppers get used to the process, they're hooked.

On-demand coupons

Some stores like British retailer Tesco and drugstore Duane Reade now are testing beacons, Bluetooth-enabled devices that can communicate directly with your cellphone to offer discounts, direct you to a desired product in a store or enable you to pay remotely.

For example, you can walk into a drugstore where you normally buy face cream. The beacon would recognize your smartphone, connect it with past purchasing history and send you a text or email with a coupon for the cream.

"The more we know about customers … you can use promotions on not a macro level but a micro level," says Kasey Lobaugh, chief retail innovation officer at Deloitte Consulting. A store could offer a mother 20 percent off on Mother's Day, for example, or offer frequent buyers of paper towels a discount on bulk purchases.

3-D Printing

Within 10 years, 3-D printing could make a major disruption in retail, Deloitte's Lobaugh predicts. Take a simple item like a coffee cup. Instead of producing one in China, transporting it and distributing it to retail stores, you could just download the code for the coffee cup and 3-D print it at a retail outlet or in your own home.

"That starts a dramatic change in terms of the structure of retail," Lobaugh said. And while 3-D printing today is primarily plastic, Lobaugh says there are tests at places like MIT Media Lab and elsewhere with other materials, including fabric.

Right now a few stores offer rudimentary 3-D-printing services, but they are very limited. He predicts the shift will come in 10 to 20 years.

Order yourself

Steve Yankovich, head of innovation for eBay, thinks someday buying household supplies won't take any effort at all. He says someday a connected home could be able to use previous customer history and real-time data the house reco! rds to se! nse when a light bulb burns out, for example, and order a new one automatically. Or a washing machine will order more detergent when it runs low.

"A box could show up on porch with this disparate set of 10 things the connected home and eBay determined you needed to keep things running smoothly," he says. "It's called zero-effort commerce."

Holograms

EBay recently bought PhiSix, a company working on creating life-size 3-D models of clothing that can be used in dressing rooms to instantly try on different colors of clothing or different styles. You can see 30 or 40 items of clothing realistically without physically trying them on.

EBay's Yankovich says the technology can be used in a virtual dressing room as well, showing what the clothes look like when you are, say, walking down the street or hitting a golf club.

Some companies have been testing this already. British digital agency Engage created a Virtual Style Pod that scanned shoppers and created a life-size image onto which luxury clothing from brands like Alexander McQueen and DKNY were projected. The Pod was displayed in shopping centers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Apple Inc's Interest in Beats Is Further Evidence of a Disturbing Trend

Although the deal has not yet been formally announced, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) is still expected to acquire Beats Electronics at some point in the near future. Much has already been written about the purchase -- its potential to bring a level of fashion to Apple's future wearables, Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine's music industry experience -- but what I find most interesting is what it says about Apple's iTunes business.

Apple's total iTunes revenue is growing, and at a rapid pace, but the model on which the business was built -- music downloads -- could slow. Streaming services are clearly the future, and though acquiring Beats should help Apple break into that business, it still poses a major challenge.

Downloads give way to subscriptions
Industry music downloads slipped 5.7% on an annual basis last year, according to Nielsen. Consistent with those figures, Asymco estimated that Apple's iTunes Music sales declined about 14% in 2013.

It's possible that a lack of quality music may have weighed on iTunes' sales last year (arguably, fewer must-have songs were released in 2013), but the growth of music subscription services cannot be discounted. Spotify, the leader in that business, now has 10 million paying subscribers, up from just 5 million 17 months ago.

iTunes and the ecosystem
That's a problem for Apple, at least in terms of its ecosystem. Apple's customers are notoriously loyal, partly because the company makes great products, but also because Apple makes it difficult to leave. It's possible to port a large iTunes catalog to Android or another rival operating system, but the process is far from straightforward.

Someone who has purchased a bunch of music through iTunes, then, is likely to remain an Apple customer, consistently buying a new iPhone every two years. The idea of the sticky ecosystem has been championed by bulls such as hedge fund manager David Einhorn, who has consistently argued that this property of iTunes makes Apple unlikely to suffer the same fate as the once-dominant phone giants that preceded it.

But a customer who switches to Spotify, or some other similar subscription service, is device agnostic. In fact, the very appeal of these subscription services is that they allow their customers to access music from anywhere -- just about any Internet-connected device can access Spotify, no matter the manufacturer.

Apple is less likely to retain its customers
In acquiring Beats, Apple will get access to its own streaming service, along with a team of music industry veterans who can help it negotiate contracts with musicians and labels.

Although Beats' subscription service trails Spotify in terms of total subscribers, it's still relatively new. Apple's engineering expertise could improve Beats Music significantly, much like it transformed SoundJam MP into iTunes.

But even if Apple were to eventually offer the premier streaming music service, and go so far as to restrict it to the iOS platform, it would be worse than having a robust iTunes business. Switching between music streaming services is easy; losing access to a catalog of songs that one has invested hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of dollars in is far more difficult.

Hot Mid Cap Companies To Invest In Right Now

It remains to be seen if Apple will actually go through the acquisition, and, if it does, what it will do with Beats Music. But Apple's interest in a streaming music service -- and, more broadly, the growth in the larger sector -- is a disturbing sign for the long-term strength of its ecosystem.

Leaked: Apple's next smart device (warning, it may shock you)
Apple recent recruited a secret-development Dream Team to guarantee their newest smart device was kept hidden from the public for as long as possible. But the secret is out...and some early viewers are even claiming its everyday impact could trump the iPod, iPhone, AND the iPad. In fact, ABI Research predicts 485 million of these type of devices will be sold per year. But one small company makes this gadget possible. And their stock price has nearly unlimited room to run for early in-the-know investors. To be one of them, and see Apple's newest smart gizmo, just click here!

Boomers cash in as bull market aids exodus from workforce

stock market, rally, workforce, participation, baby boomers

Dee Dix hesitated before she decided to retire in 2012.

“I thought, do we have enough money? How much do we need?” the 66-year-old former insurance analyst said from her home in Fort Myers, Fla. “I was a little bit leery.”

Clinching the decision was profit earned on stock investments during a five-year bull market that has restored $14 trillion to U.S. equity values. Ms. Dix is among millions of baby boomers whose retirement has helped push the participation rate of working Americans to lows not seen since the 1970s.

Some people leave the labor pool and retire after giving up on the job search. Others, like Ms. Dix, pay for it with the proceeds of rallying stocks. Joblessness and labor participation levels reaching pre-recession lows are stoking debate among Federal Reserve policy makers and politicians about what's behind the swings in data underlying the most important economic barometer, employment.

(See also: SHelping baby boomers transition into retirement)

“This issue of participation in the labor force is a highly contentious one,” said John Ryding, chief economist and co-founder of RDQ Economics in New York. He has also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “This is not some abstract discussion about sociology or demography, it's really a discussion about interest rates. The stakes are huge.”

AGING BOOMERS

What's not in dispute: the sheer size of the aging baby-boomer generation and that an unprecedented demographic shift distorts statistics. It means, for instance, that retirees can play a significant role in the shrinking labor force even as people are staying on the job longer than ever. About 8 million people aged 65 and older are working, a 72% jump from a decade ago.

It is the sharp rise of departing retirees from the workforce in the past two years that suggests more is at play, according to an analysis by Shigeru Fujita, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. While demographic trends have headed this way since about 2000, retirees became a more prominent block of the drop in the participation rate in 2010, and then grew to account for 80% of the decline since early 2012, he found.

Last year's 30% surge in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index capped a bull market now in its sixth year, while the benchmark gauge reached a record high this month. Wealth has trickled into 401(k) accounts and home valuations, tempting those who may have delayed retirement during the financial crisis, said financial adviser Jay Barish.

“Everyone u! nderstands that the market went crazy last year,” said Mr. Barish, who advises 155 clients as a partner at Murphy Matza Wealth Management in Raleigh, N.C. “If they're not in love with their career, the natural question is, 'Can I go?' That emotion absolutely ebbs and flows with a client's perceived bottom line.”

The U.S. jobless rate fell below 7% at the end of last year for the first time since 2008, helped by an exodus of retirees that has shrunk the labor force, Mr. Fujita wrote in his analysis, revised in February. Unemployment dropped even further in April, to 6.3%.

Top Income Stocks To Own For 2015

Since the start of the bull market in 2009, the number of those 55 and older leaving the workforce has increased by more than 2% each year, the fastest clip since the technology bubble of 2000 and outpacing a 10-year average rate of 1.3% through 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2008, growth for the same age bracket was 1.4%, a slower increase than the previous year's 1.7% gain, the data show.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Those numbers dovetail with the broader economic recovery, prompting Drew Matus, deputy U.S. chief economist at UBS Securities, to posit that boomers put retirement plans on hold during the depths of the financial crisis and have been revisiting those plans since.

Household wealth in the U.S. climbed by $2.95 trillion in the final three months of 2013 to an all-time high. Average 401(k) balances almost doubled from 20

  • [By John Udovich]

While Bakken formation oil and gas stocks have grabbed the attention of American investors, small cap Alberta or Saskatchewan oil and gas stocks Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd (NYSE: AAV), Sonde Resources Corp (NYSEMKT: SOQ) and up and coming Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been largely overlooked as they seek to exploit oil and gas (including oil sands) in the resource rich Canadian provinces of Alberta or Saskatchewan or seek strategic alternatives for their assets in these areas or themselves. It should be mentioned that Canada's oil reserves are third only to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta plus that province contains much of the country's conventional oil reserves as well. In addition, the province of Saskatchewan along with offshore areas of Newfoundland contain substantial production and reserves. Excluding oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canad! a's remaining conventional oil reserves, followed b y offshore Newfoundland with 28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

3 Big Stocks to Trade (or Not)

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

National Bank of Greece

Nearest Resistance: $3

Nearest Support: $2.90

Catalyst: Technical Setup

National Bank of Greece (NBG) has had a challenging run in 2014: since the start of the year, the big Greek bank has nearly been halved. Most recently, shares of NBG got hit last week after economic data from Athens indicated that the Greek economy shrank 1.1% in the first quarter. The data was enough to spark a double-digit selloff in shares of NBG.

From a technical standpoint, there's no question that NBG's chart is broken. Shares may be bouncing off of support at $2.90, but an abundance of resistance levels makes this setup best avoided until buyers can establish some semblance of support again.

Gogo

Nearest Resistance: $16

Nearest Support: $14

Catalyst: Analyst Upgrade

Inflight internet provider Gogo (GOGO) is up more than 9% this afternoon, following an analyst upgrade from UBS. The bank pegged a $23 price target on the stock, upping its rating from neutral to buy. After selling off hard earlier this month on competition fears, the upgrade is proving to be enough of a catalyst to break shares out above $14.

After trading lower for all of 2014, GOGO was starting to look "bottomy" at the start of May thanks to a short-term inverse head and shoulders pattern -- that pattern is getting triggered by today's upgrade news. While the downtrend is still very much intact for GOGO, the near-term trajectory for shares is pointing higher from here.

InterMune Pharmaceuticals

Nearest Resistance: $N/A

Nearest Support: $37.50

Catalyst: Drug Trial Results

Last up is InterMune Pharmaceuticals (ITMN), a pharma name that's up more than 14% this afternoon following news that the firm's lung disease treatment saw success in a late-stage study. Now, the firm plans to resubmit its flagship drug for approval with the FDA. The news is breaking shares of ITMN out to new highs today.

New highs are significant from an investor psychology standpoint because they mean that everyone who has bought shares in the last year is sitting on gains. As a result, the "back to even" mentality is less of a concern than it would be for a name with a higher proportion of shareholders sitting on losses. If you decide to be a buyer here, it makes sense to keep a tight protective stop in place.
