Advisors' Opinion:

For investors who want a piece of this developing trend, Transocean and Seadrill are two of the bigger players in this arena. Other offshore drillers/rig operators are Noble (NE) and Ensco (ESV). Companies that provide services to offshore drillers and benefit from increases in exploration and drilling activity are Gulfmark Offshore (GLF), Hornbeck (HOS), Seacor (CKH) and Tidewater (TDW).

Margins matter. The more Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Seacor Holdings's competitive position could be.

Asset allocation key to maximizing returns, say experts

The difference between our parents' generation and ours has always been huge and on all parameters. This contrast has never been as stark as it is in today's corporate world, where the rules of the games have changed, the dynamics have entirely changed and so have the ways in which we deal with them.

Today, we are to meet a bunch of young single, smart and successful career women from the social networking website Ditto and we are going to find out how they manage to juggle all of this and still manage their money.

Raheja and Rustagi answers their questions regarding maximising and protecting wealth.

Here is the edited transcript of the interview on CNBC-TV18.

Q: When people start investing the first thing where they get confused is whether they should be doing it on a daily basis or whether they should do it, forget about it, review it on and off, what's the best advice for someone like these ladies?

Raheja: My fervent belief is that any asset class typically requires a period of time for maturing, for it to deliver returns. Equities as a vehicle has shown that if you give it time, if you take 10 years or a longer period of 15 years, the average compounded return from equities has been around 14-15%.

If you take any large corporate in India, from Reliance to any other corporate you would name, what was it 10 years ago and what is it today? We have typically seen in our research that whatever profits grow by market cap is a reflection of stock prices. It has grown by about 1.4-1.5 times the profits of the company.

Clearly, if you are an investor and you are invested in a good company it will give you returns. However, that does not mean you do not sit and review your portfolio from time to time. Especially, if you are invested in a lot of mid and small caps which have many emerging companies and emerging managements which have not yet proven itself, you cannot stop reviewing your portfolio from time to time.

Against that, if you have proven managements who have delivered numbers over extended period of time, there is no problem in sitting with them for a longer period.

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to anticipate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives with ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.

U.S. Air Force Rethinks Its Drone Strategy

"There are those that see JSF as the last manned fighter. I'm one that's inclined to believe that." -- Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

When Admiral Mullen uttered those words a few years ago, it struck fear in the hearts of America's defense contractors -- well, those other than Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) , which builds the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. A world without manned fighter jets, after all, promises to be a world that won't need to buy Lockheed Martin F-16s fighters, Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) F/A-18 fighter bombers, or Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) EA-6B electronic warfare jets.

A brave new world...
Earlier this week, that world came one step closer, when Northrop's new X-47B prototype -- an armed, pilotless drone combat aircraft -- conducted the first-ever unmanned landing on an aircraft carrier off the Virginia coast. It's starting to become apparent that we really will one day have entire squadrons of drone fighter jets patrolling the skies, without a pilot among them.

X-47B takes off from aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, Source: Wikimedia Commons

And yet, this poses a problem.

Pilotless combat aircraft, unless they're given full autonomy to conduct missions on their own, a la Skynet...

The Terminator, Source: Wikimedia Commons

...have a built-in Achilles' heel, in that to control them, one must maintain communication with them. This communications link, though, is vulnerable to hacking by bad guys. Presumably, the farther away the drone, the weaker the signal from "home" -- and the easier it will be for an enemy to disrupt our military's ability to control its drones.

...and how to survive in it
So, how does a military protect its unmanned aerial vehicles from hackers, and maintain control over pilotless drones in combat? The answer may be the solution to Lockheed's, Boeing's, and Northrop's problems.

"Most studies indicate that we are a little overly invested in [drone] capabilities for permissive environments and perhaps under-invested in capabilities for the high-end fight," laments one U.S. Air Force report. While General Atomics' Predators and Reapers may operate fine "droning" along uncontested airspace in Afghanistan, most UAVs today would be vulnerable when operating in an "anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) environment" such as Chinese or Russian airspace. They'd be equally incapable of defending themselves from hostile anti-aircraft fire, and from hostile hackers, who may attempt to jam communication with, or even take over control of pilotless drones.

According to a report on, USAF has been spending a lot of time lately thinking about how to run drones in such "contested environments".

One solution to this problem might be upgrading air defense systems on drones, and hardening their communications to resist jamming and hacking. Another might be to build "optionally manned" aircraft -- full-size fighter jets that could be piloted, or pilotless, depending on the theater in which they're called upon to operate. A third option might be to send a sort of piloted "mothership" along with a squadron of drones, to control and protect them from longer-distance jamming attempts.

And a fourth... might be to resign oneself to the possibility that drones may always be vulnerable to jamming -- and acknowledge that the world really hasn't changed all that much. Maintaining -- and building, and buying -- a mix of piloted, and pilotless aircraft may still be necessary.

Therein may lie salvation for the revenue streams of the piloted fighter jet manufacturers.

Although they may be the most obvious, defense contractors aren't the only companies struggling for world domination. In fact, the struggle for market share among consumer products companies may be just as fierce. But the good news is... we're winning here, too. Advisors' Opinion:

Back in 2012, I wrote a piece titled, "Five Trends Driving Traditional Retail Towards Extinction." Looking back, I'm generally happy to see that the trends I examined are still valid, though "extinction" might be a little strong. Living in New York provides a firsthand view into the petri dish that many of these companies use to experiment. So almost two years later, I've revisited the space to focus on three more trends that are changing the way we shop. (I'm leaving out an exploration of mobile for the moment, since it's probably worth its own post.) The Macro View First, a brief look at the bigger picture. Last month marked Amazon's (AMZN) 20th anniversary, which is kind of amazing to think about since e-commerce seems both very new and indispensable at the same time. Either way, the world has had plenty of time to digest the trend. It makes some sense then that the pace of e-commerce growth appears to be decelerating in both the developed and developing worlds. I should note that a deceleration in the developing world means going from say, 94 percent year-over-year growth in China in 2012, to 64 percent in 2014. Those are still monster numbers, and there's still plenty of land to grab, but the peak growth rates appear to be in the rearview. In the U.S., the pace of growth is a more stately 14 percent. The sector attracts a healthy sum of sum of venture money -- nearly $1 billion in Q1 of 2014, according the National Venture Capital Association. But all of that strength doesn't mean that the future of shopping is as simple as buying everything online. Consider our first trend: Location-Based Technology for Stores For online retailers, it's always been relatively easy to gather data about customers. If you run a Web company you can track all kinds of information about shoppers who visit your site -- where they're located, how they reached your page, what they look at and where they get held up during the shopping process. What's more, competitors like Macy's (NYSE: M  ) and Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) seemed to be firing on all cylinders last quarterbyincreasingsame-store sales, boosting dividends, and instituting huge share repurchase programs.

  • [By Grace L. Williams]

The hits keep coming at high-end retailer Nordstrom (JWN).

After reporting a decline in fourth-quarter earnings and weak sales, shares traded down 0.3% to $59.24 today. And Sterne, Agee & Leach Charles Grom, while acknowledging that the fourth quarter was K,warned that there were issues developing underneath. He explains:

Beneath the surface, there are two disturbing trends emerging that shouldn go unnoticed, including: 1) a more promotional environment/gross profit margin risk (as Nordstrom price matches); and 2) full line cannibalization (via e-commerce), which structurally compresses Nordstrom top-line algo. All told, the Nordstrom experience is one of the best in retail, but the stock is dead money for the foreseeable future, in our view.

Grom accentuated a few positives that included a rise in same-store sales by 2.6% and decent earnings. A rise in inventory levels and lower EPS guidance were some of the negatives, Grom said.

Nordstrom’s pain didn’t cause stand in the way of gains for some other department store stocks. Dillard’s (DDS) gained 1.5% to $89.33, while Macy’s (M) rose 0.5% to $53.71. Even J.C. Penney (JCP) had a better day. It finished down just 0.2% at $5.64.

  • [By Robert Martin]

Deutsche Bank(DB) analysts, for example, expect the department store space overall to struggle this holiday season in the face of declining mall traffic and overall spending that is lackluster. That means they expect stronger stores likeMacy’s(M)andNordstrom(JWN) to post even lower earnings, and flailing JCPenney to post an even wider loss.

For starters, imagine that you invested in Mesabi Trust (NYSE: MSB  ) about a year ago and you're down some 20% on your investment. Your holding might be looking to you like an answer to the question, "What is investment panic, Alex?" But don't be so hasty. Ask yourself why you bought it. Mesabi Trust is a royalty trust that receives and then pays out to shareholders a portion of the proceeds from iron mined by aCliffs Natural Resourcessubsidiary. Some might avoid it because royalty trusts often have expiration dates, but it's worth noting that Mesabi's is ratherfar away. But slowdown in demandfor ore is a concern, one that has beenan issue for Cliffs, too.

Advisors' Opinion:

Finally, shares of American Railcar Industries, (NASDAQ: ARII  ) , which makes, services, and leases railcars, shed 4.9% on Thursday. Of the 15 publicly traded railroad stocks in the U.S., 13 fell today, though American Railcar Industries' investors took the worst hit. The Surface Transportation Board held a two-day hearing this week on the issue of competitive switching, which the National Industrial Transportation League said would increase competition. Investors didn't see the merit in the proposal, which could hurt the $1.4 billion American Railcar Industries. McDonald's has issues defending itself at the top of the food chain, but J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) would kill to have those dilemmas. "Mo' money, mo' problems" doesn't apply to the corporate world, where companies tend to run across mo' problems in the very effort to acquire mo' money. Even though J.C. Penney doesn't have much money -- it has "liquidity concerns" in Wall Street-speak -- the stock tacked on 2.3% today. The retailer is in much better shape than it was last year after raising cash, taking out a $2.25 billion loan, and closing locations, but my colleague Adam Levine-Weinberg thinks J.C. Penney may need to issue more shares to meet its cash goals in 2014.

Advisors' Opinion:

The stock dipped below $3 on an intraday basis for the first time since late February, but there was more going on beyond share-price gyrations. The media giant also announced a couple of special concerts for Sirius XM subscribers. Auto sales were strong in March, leading a major tracker to boost its outlook for 2013. A study also shows that Pandora (NYSE: P  ) and streaming music may be more popular than we think.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is Internet radio player Pandora Media (P) which is set to release numbers on Thursday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Pandora Media to report revenue of $174.76 million on earnings of 6 cents per share.

Just recently, Piper Jaffray raised its price target on Pandora Media to $37 from $27, noting improving mobile monetization and a more benign competitive landscape now that all the major players have entered the market Piper reiterated its overweight rating on the stock, saying it remains bullish on the name.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Pandora Media is pretty high at 13.4%. That means that out of the 137.07 million shares in the tradable float, 23.51 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, the shares of P could explode sharply higher post-earnings as a solid short-covering rally takes hold.

From a technical perspective, P is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $13.95 to its recent high of $31.94 a share. During that uptrend, shares of P have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of P within range of triggering a big breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on P, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its all-time high at $31.94 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 11.57 million shares. If that breakout hits, then P will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $45 to $50 a

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd (NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let's be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merely allow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China's 34 province-level administrations to revise their laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China's family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level to collect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes – meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set to take advantage of the coming changes.
