Top 5 Heal Care Stocks To Buy For 2014

America's shale gas revolution is already paying off big time. Not only has it been a boon to consumers and companies who use natural gas for heating their homes and offices, it also appears to be benefiting the environment. Let's take a closer look.

EIA reports lower CO2 emissions
Last week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide emissions for 2012 fell to 5.3 billion tons the lowest level in nearly two decades. What's more is that since 2007, emissions have declined consecutively each year, with the exception of 2010. The reason?

The EIA attributed the decline in CO2 emissions primarily to the shift away from coal, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, and toward natural gas, the least carbon-intensive fuel, for electric power generation. Less demand for transportation fuels and relatively weak demand for winter heating also played a role in driving emissions lower.

Top Clean Energy Stocks To Invest In Right Now

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE  ) would close higher on the week. The provider of natural gas fueling solutions for transportation has been posting narrowing losses, and Wall Street was eyeing a 35% surge in revenue. The company was a solid report. Revenue came in a little light, but bottom-line results improved nicely. Shares of Clean Energy Fuels moved slightly higher on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market had a strong run this week, fueled be encouraging economic news. Secondary stocks led the way, with the Nasdaq soaring 1.7% on the week. The Dow managed to close just 1% higher. I was right. My final call was for Compass Diversified Holdings (NYSE: CODI  ) to beat Wall Street's quarterly profit target. The investor in several middle-market companies has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.36 a share during the quarter, but Compass Diversified failed to beat the prognosticators. I was wrong.

Two out of three? I'll take it. That makes me eight of nine over the past three weeks.

5 Best Gold Stocks To Watch Right Now: Telik Inc (TELK)

Telik, Inc. (Telik), incorporated in 1988, is a clinical-stage drug development company focused on discovering and developing small molecule drugs to treat cancer. The Company discovers its product candidates using the Company drug discovery technology, Target-Related Affinity Profiling (TRAP). TELINTRA, its principal drug product candidate in clinical development, is a small molecule glutathione analog inhibitor of the enzyme glutathione S-transferase P1-1 (GST P1-1). TELCYTA, its other product candidate, is a small molecule cancer drug product candidate designed to be activated in cancer cells.

Clinical Product Development

TELINTRA is the Company lead small molecule product candidate in clinical development for the treatment of blood disorders, including cancer. It has a mechanism of action and acts by inhibiting GST P1-1, an enzyme that is involved in the control of cellular growth and differentiation. Inhibition of GST P1-1 results in the activation of the signaling molecule Jun kinase, a regulator of the function of blood precursor cells. Preclinical tests show that TELINTRA is capable of causing the death or apoptosis of leukemic or malignant blood cells, while stimulating the growth and development of normal blood precursor cells. TELINTRA has been studied in Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) using two formulations. A liposomal formulation was developed for intravenous administration of TELINTRA and was used in Phase I and Phase II studies in MDS patients. The results from the Phase II intravenous liposomal TELINTRA clinical trials demonstrated that TELINTRA treatment was associated with improvement in all three types of blood cell levels in patients with all types of MDS, including those in intermediate and high-risk groups. An oral dosage formulation (tablet) was subsequently developed and results from a Phase I study with TELINTRA tablets showed clinical activity and the formulation to be well tolerated. In June 2011, the Company initiated a Phase II clinical ! trial to evaluate TELINTRA tablets. In October 2011, the Company initiated an additional Phase IIb clinical trial to evaluate TELINTRA tablets. '

The activity and safety profile of tablet formulation allowed the Company to complete a Phase II trial of TELINTRA tablets in MDS. The primary objective of the Phase II TELINTRA tablet study was to determine the efficacy of TELINTRA. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify MDS disease prognostic factors associated with erythroid improvement response rates, including prior MDS treatment, age, gender, the international prognostic scoring system (IPSS), risk, Eastern Cooperative Group performance status, years from MDS diagnosis, MDS World Health Organization subtypes, anemia only versus anemia plus other cytopenias, dose schedule and starting dose. Results from this study show that TELINTRA is the first GSTP1-1 enzyme inhibitor shown to cause clinically reductions in red blood cell transfusions, including transfusion independence in low to intermediate-1 risk MDS patients, as well as improvement in platelet count and white blood cell levels in certain patients. TELINTRA, administered orally twice daily, appeared to be convenient and flexible for chronic treatment administration.

TELCYTA is a small molecule drug product candidate that the Company is developed for the treatment of cancer. TELCYTA binds to GST. TELCYTA has been evaluated in multiple Phase II and Phase III clinical trials, including trials using TELCYTA as monotherapy and in combination regimens in ovarian, non-small cell lung, breast and colorectal cancer. Results from these clinical trials indicate that TELCYTA monotherapy was generally well-tolerated, with mostly mild to moderate side effects, particularly when compared to the side effects and toxicities of standard chemotherapeutic drugs. When TELCYTA was evaluated in combination with standard chemotherapeutic drugs, the tolerability of the combinations was similar to that expected of each! drug alo! ne.

Clinical activity including objective tumor responses and/or disease stabilization was reported in the TELCYTA Phase II trials; however, TELCYTA did not meet its primary endpoints in the Phase III studies. Positive results from a Phase I-IIa multicenter, dose-ranging study of TELCYTA in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel as first-line therapy for patients with non-small cell lung cancer, or NSCLC, were published in a peer reviewed publication. Clinical data demonstrated positive results of TELCYTA in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel in the treatment of first-line lung cancer followed by TELCYTA maintenance therapy. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had an on-going investigator-led study at a single site of TELCYTA in patients with refractory or relapsed mantle cell lymphoma, diffuse B cell lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Preclinical Drug Product Development

The Company has a small molecule compound, TLK60404, in preclinical development that inhibits both Aurora kinase and VEGFR kinase. Aurora kinase is a signaling enzyme whose function is required for cancer cell division, while VEGF plays a key role in tumor blood vessel formation, ensuring an adequate supply of nutrients to support tumor growth. These lead compounds prevented tumor growth in preclinical models of human colon cancer and human leukemia by inhibiting both Aurora kinase and VEGFR kinase. A development drug product candidate, TLK60404, has been selected.

The Company, using its TRAP technology has discovered TLK60357, a novel, potent small molecule inhibitor of cell division. TLK60357 inhibits the formation of microtubules that are necessary for cancer cell growth leading to persistent G2/M cancer cell cycle block and subsequent cell death. This compound demonstrates potent broad-spectrum anticancer activity against a number of human cancer cells. This compound also displays oral efficacy in multiple, standard preclinical models of cancer. TLK60596, a potent VG! FR kinase! inhibitor, blocks the formation of new blood vessels in tumors. Oral administration of TLK60596 to animal models of human colon cancer reduced tumor growth.

Best Cheapest Companies To Invest In 2014

Once the most valuable company in the world, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) stock dipped below $400 this week to bottom out at its lowest levels since 2011. Yet as shares of Apple continue to free-fall, the stock's valuation becomes increasingly more attractive. The stock is currently trading at just nine times earnings, well below the market average of 15 times earnings.

From a valuation standpoint, this means Apple stock is trading at its cheapest level in at least 10 years, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Why you want to own it
The stock looks even better when you consider Apple's balance sheet, which boasts zero debt and more than $137 billion in cash and investments. And we can't forget the stock's 2.6% dividend yield. Better still, the company's massive cash reserves mean there's plenty of room for dividend increases or stock buybacks in Apple's future.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

    Nearest Resistance: $2

    Nearest Support: $1.55

    Catalyst: Turnaround Murmurs

Affymax (AFFY) is seeing surprising trading volume on the Nasdaq today for a third session in a row. The sudden spike in the biopharmaceutical firm surrounds earnings -- not the numbers per se but the comments made by management during the earnings call. Speculators think that those comments could bode well for AFFY's diabetes drug, but the rumors are still very much just that.

Between hints at bankruptcy and management opting to fire themselves, AFFY has been in freefall in 2013. Even though the stock has more than doubled this week, it's still down 90% on the year. And at this point, headline risk is still far too high to consider this stock a high-probability trade.

If you've got skin in the game and want to speculate on AFFY's fortunes, that's one thing. Buying because of this week's price action alone would be a mistake.

It is one of the world’s biggest carrier-neutral suppliers of wholesale data center and co-location services, offering private data centers and suites, cage-to-cabinet co-location and interconnection opportunities.

COR went public in the fall of 2010. Since the company is structured as a REIT, it must pay out at least 90% of net income to shareholders who, in turn, must pay ordinary income taxes on dividend income unless the shares are held in a retirement account.

The two Wall Street analysts that cover the stock have the company earning a consensus 98 cents for 2011. That’s a 24% year-over-year growth rate in an economy forecast to grow by 2%. As such, if the company is set to pay out 90% of earnings, then we should see a forward dividend yield of around 6% for 2011, assuming earnings per share of roughly $1. COR currently yields 3.57%. Buy it up to $16.

Obama Focusing on Job Creation in Baltimore Visit

BALTIMORE (AP) -- President Barack Obama is leaving behind scandal-focused Washington to focus on the country's slowly improving jobs picture.

Obama is to fly by helicopter Friday about 40 miles north to Baltimore, which has had its share of tough times in the move from an industrial to service economy. But Maryland has experienced job growth this year as part of a nationwide economic recovery.

The White House said the trip is designed to focus on three areas of needed investment to grow the middle class -- jobs, skills, and opportunity.

The president plans to highlight one of the manufacturing companies still thriving in the city by speaking at Ellicott Dredges. It makes equipment for excavation under water and on beachfronts around the world.

Obama also plans to visit a community center that provides job training to parents and an elementary school that provides early childhood education. Obama has proposed that public preschool be available for all 4-year-olds from low-income families.

The focus on Obama's economic agenda comes at the end of a week that has been consumed by a trio of political controversies. They include the targeting of conservative political groups by the Internal Revenue Service, the administration's response to last year's deadly attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, and the seizure of Associated Press phone records by the Justice Department as part of a leak investigation.

Obama's turn to the economy comes in a state that added 31,200 jobs over a year to climb to a 6.5 percent unemployment rate in April, according to the most recent data by the U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. April saw a downturn, with Maryland losing 6,200 jobs after four consecutive month of job growth.

"Last year, we had the best-rated job creation of any state in our region and we have very nearly recovered 100 percent of the jobs that we lost during the recession," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said at a bill-signing ceremony on Thursday.

Rep. Andy Harris, Maryland's only Republican congressman, criticized Obama's trip as a photo opportunity, instead of staying in Washington to work on economic problems. For example, Harris said Obama has been dragging his feet on developing the Keystone XL pipeline that would carry oil from western Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast and create jobs. The administration has not yet taken a position on the project, which is opposed by environmentalists but supported by the president of Ellicott Dredges, Peter Bowe, in testimony before Congress Thursday.

"That would boost jobs at Ellicott Dredges, but other than that, it's just going to be another photo op on a campaign-style tour when the president should be in Washington tending to the nation's business and to address the huge scandals that are popping up on a daily basis in Washington," Harris said in a conference call with other Maryland Republicans.

Obama planned to tout another effort to create jobs in his visit to Ellicott Dredges. He signed a memorandum Friday to federal agencies directing them to update infrastructure permit processes with the goal of cutting their timelines in half. The White House said it's an important step in his goal of creating jobs by making urgent repairs to roads, bridges, and railways.

"By cutting red tape and shaving months, and even years, off the time it takes to review and approve major infrastructure projects, we will be able to start construction sooner, create jobs earlier, and fix our nation's infrastructure faster," the White House said in a statement. It cited an example of the recently approved replacement of the aging Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River in the suburbs just north of New York City, which saved two to three years on the timeline.

Top Shipping Companies To Watch For 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of shipping company Navios Maritime (NYSE: NM  ) jumped as much as 14% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Revenue fell 12% from a year ago to $133.8 million, but it easily topped the $97.1 million estimate. The company lost $0.10 per share, but that was well ahead of the expected $0.22 loss, and that got investors excited today.

Now what: The dry-bulk segment was hit hardest over the past year, and rates fell 45% to $11,820 per day. There's a long history of challenges in this segment, and it doesn't appear to be getting any better, with oversupply in the industry. Today's results may have beaten expectations, but I'm not a buyer, because the company's still seeing deteriorating results.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Hilary Kramer]

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) recently transformed itself by acquiring Pharmasset (NASDAQ:VRUS), which has developed a promising treatment for Hepatitis C called PSI-7977 and has scored a perfect cure rate in clinical testing. Hepatitis C is largely an untreated disease, and the market potential is huge. The acquisition will dilute Gilead’s earnings through 2014, but GILD will remain solidly profitably through its strong roster of drugs that treat HIV.

Best Integrated Utility Companies To Own In Right Now

The two largest proxy advisors in the U.S. have lined up against key leadership at JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) . The ensuing proxy fight is shaping up to be the year's most exciting, as Institutional Shareholders Services and Glass, Lewis recommend that investors vote down six key directors in the wake of various scandals, including the London Whale debacle.

Not surprisingly, JPMorgan thinks those directors are doing a good job. JPMorgan counterpunched, "The members of the board's risk committee have a diversity and breadth of experiences that have served the company well," and that mistakes leading to its $6 billion London Whale losses "were not attributable to the risk committee."

Gimme a break.

At some point, I believe shareholders should stop accepting excuses and start holding leadership accountable. And the company's upcoming annual meeting provides them with a good opportunity to cause a major shakeup at the top-most levels of the company.

3 Things to Love About British American Tobacco

LONDON -- There are things to love and loathe about most companies. Today, I'm going to tell you about three things to love about British American Tobacco  (LSE: BATS  ) (NYSEMKT: BTI  ) .

I'll also be asking whether these positive factors make the FTSE 100's biggest tobacco company a good investment today.

Long-term outperformance
British American Tobacco (BAT) has been a top FTSE 100 long-term performer. The company has delivered shareholders an annualized return of 21% over the last 10 years compared with 9% for the market as a whole. The five-year figures are 17% and 6%, respectively.

The company, which counts Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike, and Pall Mall among its top-selling brands, has continued to thrive through litigation and regulation scares, rewarding shareholders year after year.

Defensive
The manner in which BAT has rewarded shareholders is as impressive as the magnitude of the returns.

Companies in so-called "defensive" sectors generally cope better than companies in "cyclical" sectors in a recessionary environment, because they supply things people can't do without. Tobacco is a defensive company par excellence.

Between October 2007 and March 2009 -- less than 18 months -- the FTSE 100 dived a whopping 48%. Over the same period, BAT's shares fell just 4%, giving shareholders no cause to lose any sleep.

Global
BAT is the most international tobacco company in the world. As the table below shows, revenues are divided pretty equally across four regions that cover the entire globe.

Region

Revenue (billion pounds)

Proportion of total revenue (%)

Asia-Pacific

4.2

28

Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa

4.1

27

Americas

3.5

23

Western Europe

3.4

22

Total

15.2

100

BAT's global reach means it has substantial exposure to fast-growing developing markets. These give the company a powerful engine to drive future shareholder returns.

A good investment?
BAT has been a huge success for long-term investors. Perhaps, tobacco will one day be legislated out of existence, but I find it hard to see that happening for many decades, if at all.

The shares are currently changing hands for around 3,700 pence, which represents a bit over 16 times forecast earnings for 2013. The prospective dividend yield is 4%. Despite the share price being at an all-time high, the earnings multiple is in line with the market average, and the yield is superior.

BAT's long-term record of delivering for shareholders, and analyst forecasts of continuing double-digit earnings growth, suggest that, while the shares aren't in the bargain basement, they're not altogether unreasonably priced.

One savvy investor who has ridden the BAT success steed -- and is still aboard -- is City legend Neil Woodford, whose funds have outperformed the market for almost a quarter of a century. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James K. Glassman]

Cisco's shares have never recovered after sinking sharply after the tech bubble burst in 2000. But the company's balance sheet is rock solid, with cash far outweighing debts. And the stock is dirt-cheap, going for 9 times estimated earnings of $1.91 per share for the year that ends in July 2013.

The telecom-equipment giant began paying a dividend in 2011 and increased the quarterly payout by 2 cents, to 8 cents a share, in April. In mid August, Cisco announced another dividend increase, to 14 cents a share, starting with the October payment. Its stock, at $17.35, yields 3.2%. The company also bought back $4.4 billion worth of shares in the fiscal year that ended in July.

Cloud computing is a trend you want to own a part of -- Cisco Systems (CSCO) projects that global cloud traffic will make up 64% of total data center traffic by 2016, up from 29% in 2011. But how to buy in? Many of the biggest cloud-computing "companies" are actually units of larger companies rather than standalone businesses. I don't think buying Amazon.com (AMZN) to get its data center and cloud-computing business makes a whole lot of sense.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As the standard bearer in the IP networking business, Cisco (CSCO) gets a lot of eyes on it. Despite a somewhat soft market for corporate spending, IT dollars have been flowing in the last several years as new trends like cloud computing up the infrastructure that firms need to offer customers. That's helped spur on the solid growth rates that Cisco's been booking in each of the last four years.

A big installed base gives Cisco an inherent advantage in selling its big-ticket networking components. Because IT departments want minimal headaches when adding onto their infrastructure, going with a single vendor is typically the most painless approach -- and that's boosted customer stickiness for CSCO. That's not to say that there hasn't been increased competition lately; as enterprise IT spending continues to climb higher, more firms want to eat Cisco's lunch. To avoid that, the firm is going to have to keep innovating.

One result of Cisco's dominant position in the IP networking business is a mountain of cash -- around $30 billion after all of its debt is accounted for. Cash comes with some concerns for big tech companies, namely the propensity to overpay for acquisition opportunities. And even though Cisco's latest targets haven't come cheap, they've been small enough to not dilute shareholder vale enough to matter. That said, Cisco's management needs to return more value to shareholders in the form of dividends or buybacks in this market -- holding $30 billion in cash in a low rate, [comparatively] high inflation environment isn't viable for long.

The need to return cash to shareholders isn't exactly a secret, so when that value return happens, expect CSCO's share price to jump in kind…
