When sales don't work, there's always begging -- at least that's what J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) seems to think with a new advertising campaign that pleads with shoppers to return to the department store.

Although I think former CEO Ron Johnson's idea to go with an everyday-low-pricing strategy wasn't a bad one, the outcome was disastrous. Shoppers fled to rivals Macy's�and Kohl's,�and Penney's earnings were a disaster as it lost $985 million in 2012.

The strategy shift was based on the premise that consumers were smart enough to see through the shenanigans of raising prices only to lower them for a "sale." Johnson thought shoppers would prefer being able to shop anytime in his store and get a low price every day. He was wrong.

So Johnson was unceremoniously ousted and Penney is back to playing the same game as everyone else. Now it's offering up a cloying mea culpa of sorts to customers: We changed, you didn't like it, so we changed back -- please, please, please come back to us!

    Alamy Sometime, companies can make brilliant moves; other times, things don't work out quite as planned. From an airline overpaying its departing CEO to a new way to eat a waffle in the morning, here's a rundown of this week's best and worst results from the business world. Cedar Fair (FUN) -- Winner There were plenty of reasons to expect amusement park operator Cedar Fair to post lower revenue than it did a year earlier. The crowd-drawing Easter holiday slipped into the first quarter this year. Cedar Fair sold ones of its parks. There was one week less in the second quarter than during last year's period. More importantly, rival Six Flags (SIX) posted a 3 percent decline in revenue during the same period a few days ago. However, the parent company of Cedar Point and Knott's Berry Farm came through with a 1 percent uptick in revenue as guest spending was more than enough to offset the slowing turnstile clicks. This may be a small step, but it's welcome at a time when it faced the same fierce headwinds that many of its coaster rides do. J.C. Penney (JCP) -- Loser Activist investor Bill Ackman is raising a stink at J.C. Penney. Has he forgotten what happened the last time? Ackman is frustrated that the chain has stuck to former CEO Mike Ullman as its interim helmsman for too long. He wants the stumbling retailer to rush the process and bring another former J.C. Penney CEO to step in as chairman of the board. The problem here is that it was Ackman that pushed for J.C. Penney to bring on Apple Store mastermind Ron Johnson to rescue the chain two years ago. The makeover went terribly, and sales fell sharply as Johnson's moves alienated loyal shoppers without wooing new customers. Ackman is an accomplished investor, but it's hard to take him seriously here. Yum!     Coach (NYSE: COH  ) will release its quarterly report tomorrow, and investors are riding a positive wave of enthusiasm since the company's previous report back in April. Yet even though the stock seems convinced of the success of the company's turnaround, expected growth in Coach earnings seems tepid at best, at least for now.

    Now let�� look at Dun & Bradstreet (DNB). Dun & Bradstreet costs $80.27 a share. So $100 will buy you 1.25 shares of Dun & Bradstreet. Dun & Bradstreet has $5.29 in earnings per share. So, 1.25 shares would deliver $6.61 a share in earnings. We can think of $6.61 a share in earnings as the amount of present earnings your $100 can buy you in Dun & Bradstreet stock.

    Coach grew revenue per share 20% over the last five years. While Dun & Bradstreet grew revenue per share 9% a year over the last five years.

    Let�� imagine ��just for the sake of argument ��what would happen if Dun & Bradstreet and Coach both grew their earnings for the next five years at the same pace they grew them over the last five years.

    This is how much earnings my same $100 would buy in each stock:

    If Coach�� growth prospects still looked good in five years, the stock might have a P/E of 20. Meanwhile, Dun & Bradstreet�� growth might still be barely inching along. Actual sales growth at DNB is only around 3% a year. The per share growth is due to constant share buybacks. Check out Dun & Bradstreet�� 10-year financial summary for evidence of the mammoth stock buyback they��e done over the last decade. Shares outstanding have declined almost 40%.
