Best Bank Stocks To Own Right Now

If you were hoping for higher interest rates on your CD, you're going to be sorely disappointed by today's jobs report, even though it's surprisingly good. And if you're bullish on stocks, you've got both good news and bad news.

The nation's economy added 204,000 non-farm jobs in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, vs. the Wall Street consensus estimate of 122,000 . The unemployment rate rose to 7.3%, vs. 7.2% in September. "This is a mind-blower," says Mark Hamrick, Washington bureau chief for bankrate.com.

October surprise: Economy adds 204,000 jobs

For savers, though, the news isn't quite good enough. October's reading still means that the unemployment rate is well above 6.5%, the level at which the Fed has indicated it would start increasing interest rates. The number of full-time workers as a percentage of the workforce is still low. Until more people are employed and spending money the Fed will keep rates low.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The one currency that is running against the weak dollar tide is the Japanese yen. The yen initially climbed on the Fed's no taper decision—rising to 97.75 on the news—but then fell all the way back to 99 yen to the dollar and finished yesterday at 99.42. (Remember that since the yen is quoted in yen to the dollar, a higher number is a sign of a weak yen and a smaller number means the yen is getting stronger.) The thinking seems to be that the recent Japanese trade deficit will push the Bank of Japan to further weaken the yen, in order to boost Japanese exports. I continue to think that the yen will finish 2013 at weaker levels than current trading, and that leads me to continue to hold positions in Japanese stocks such as Toyota Motor (TM) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MTU). Both stocks are members of my Jubaks Picks portfolio.

As you might imagine, the portfolio will tread into areas of the market others ignore, because of its contrarian bent. Right now, its holdings include some very unloved firms, including several financials, emerging market stocks, and much-maligned BP. Here's a look at five of the stock in our Dreman portfolio:

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CM)

    BP Plc (BP)

    Telecom Argentina SA (TEO)

    China Mobile Limited (CHL)

    Vale SA (VALE)
