Top 5 Dow Dividend Stocks To Invest In 2014

Last week, shares of MannKind (MNKD) surged 42% after an FDA panel recommended approving its inhaled diabetes drug, Afrezza. The good feelings didn’t last too long, as the FDA has extended its review period by three months.

Cowen’s Simos Simeonidis and Yatin Suneja call the decision “not a real surprise.” They explain why:

The decision to extend the Afrezza PDUFA date is not a major surprise, given all the information and feedback FDA has to incorporate into an approval decision, including the debate on the product’s efficacy and safety, its potential label and the postmarketing surveillance program.

We expect that despite the serious concerns raised by the panel, including about Afrezza’s safety and efficacy, the agency is highly likely to approve it. After attending the panel last week, we came out with the view that the agency wants to make Afrezza available to patients, in great part because of what is viewed as a “real need” for specific patient groups that may not be good candidates for injectable insulins, like patients not willing or able to use injectable insulins due to poor eyesight, lack of manual dexterity, being alone in their homes without a caregiver, needle-phobia etc…

But instead of that, I chose to go to Tractor Supply (TSCO), which was a favorite of mine from the past. But DaVita is a good company. I didn't really like to pass it up in September. I was glad to have the opportunity to buy it in October.

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

Power Integrations (POWI) designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary, high-voltage, analog integrated circuits for use in AC-DC and DC-DC power conversion in the consumer, communications, computer and industrial electronics markets. This stock closed up 5.9% at $55.15 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 571,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 218,547

    Volume % Change: 173%

From a technical perspective, POWI ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $50.68 with above-average volume. This move also pushed shares of POWI into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $55.38. At last check, POWI closed a bit off its intraday high and volume was well above its three-month average action of 218,547 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in POWI as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $52.60 and then once it sustains a move or close above Wednesday's high of $55.59 with volume that this near or above 218,547 shares. If we see that move soon, then POWI will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $60 to $62.

    Resilient resources
While weakness in fertilizer markets hurt Sociedad Quimica y Minera (NYSE: SQM  ) this year, higher sales volume and margins in other businesses helped the company grow earnings 19% over 2012. Sociedad has a hand in many industrial resources, from iodine to lithium, and it boasts healthy double-digit profit margins. It is also expanding its production capacity to keep up with a world hungry for more fertilizer-based food and lithium-based batteries. Still, the company failed to meet recent expectations and has missed the market rally this year. If markets get spooked and head downward, investors could find peace of mind in the intrinsic value of Sociedad's physical resources, as well as its 2.6% dividend yield.

The technology of fracturing (and the horizontal style of drilling), is changing America's needs on the energy front. At the epicenter of this infrastructure build-out is Atlas Pipeline Partners (NYSE:APL), a midstream gathering and processing company that trades as a Master Limited Partnership, (MLP). Atlas Pipeline is essentially a middle man between the drillers and long-haul transportation pipelines. It gathers mixed volumes of natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, and butanes, etc. from the thousands of wells drilled by its drilling customers, back through pipelines to its processing plants, which will separate the gas from the NGLs. Both are then sold to long-haul transportation pipelines, which take the two products downstream to the next part of the energy supply chain.
