Senomyx (SNMX) discovers, develops and commercializes flavor ingredients for the packaged food, beverage and ingredient supply industries using proprietary taste receptor-based assays and screening technologies. This stock closed up 10.4% to $8.49 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $7.70-$8.62

    52-Week Range: $3.27-$12.74

    Thursday's Volume: 622,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 425,867

From a technical perspective, SNMX ripped sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $7.66 and back above its 50-day moving average of $8.68 with above-average volume. This stock has formed a major bottoming chart pattern over the last month and change, with shares finding buying interest at $7.39, $7.55 and $7.66 a share. Shares of SNMX are now starting to spike sharply higher above those support levels and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if SNMX manages to take out its 50-day moving average of $8.68 and then once it clears more key overhead resistance levels at $9.38 to $10.11 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SNMX as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $8.04 or above some more near-term support at $7.66 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 425,867 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SNMX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $12 to its 52-week high at $12.74.

Advisors' Opinion:

VOC Energy Trust (VOC): Formed by a private energy firm, VOC owns both oil and gas wells in has wells in Kansas and Texas. The royalty trust owns an 80% net royalty on the wells on its properties. That makes a prime play on rising energy prices- no matter which fuel is doing well. VOC’s royalties will expire at the end of 2031 and yield no terminal value. Meaning shares will go to zero. Yet, VOC features a trailing yield of about14% based on the last four payments.

Energy has been the sector most beaten up in 2014. It has yielded up a number of deeply undervalued companies and it's likely that it enjoys some rebound in 2015. My favorite companies are Adams Resources & Energy Inc (NYSE: AE), VAALCO Energy, Inc. (NYSE: EGY), Pacific Ethanol Inc (NASDAQ: PEIX), Statoil ASA (ADR) (NYSE: STO), VOC Energy Trust (NYSE: VOC), Gran Tierra Energy Inc. (NYSE: GTE), Petrobras Argentina SA ADR (NYSE: PZE), and PBF Energy Inc (NYSE: PBF), all of which are cheap on an acquirer's multiple basis.

After diving into Windstream Holdings' (NASDAQ: WIN  ) updated plans to spin off an asset-heavy real estate investment trust, I received an email from one of my readers. The reader -- let's call her Betty -- was concerned about what might happen to her generous Windstream dividends when the REIT spinoff takes place.

  • [By Jayson Derrick]

Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN) announced it plans to spin off its fiber and copper networks in addition to other real estates into a new publicly traded REIT. The company's board of directors approved the plans following a favorable letter ruling from the IRS, which leads management to the belief that it can reduce its debt by $3.2 billion and free up cash flow to invest in broadband. Following the spin-off the company will issue a $0.70 per share dividend with $0.60 coming from the REIT. Shares hit new 52-week highs of $13.30 before closing the day at $11.83, up 12.35 percent.
