Top 10 Retail Companies To Invest In Right Now

Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) recently reported earnings results that were held back by slowing growth in the company's international sales. In the video below, Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos discusses how Amazon's weakness overseas was driven by soft sales of digital products and the lack of cloud services revenue. With major rivals boosting their investments in both areas, Demitrios argues that achieving sales growth will only get tougher for Amazon from here.

Everyone knows Amazon is the king of the retail world right now, but at its sky-high valuation, most investors are worried it's the company's share price that will get knocked down instead of competitors'. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sam Collins]

Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR) is a leading operator of discount variety stores. The stock has hugged its 50-day moving average since mid-February. But a recent minor revision of earnings for this year by several analysts and the recent market sell-off have resulted in a fall from its high of the year at over $70 to under $66. However, Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) increased its price target to $73 from $69.

Technically DLTR is oversold, according to MACD. A break below its 50-day moving average could result in a pullback to $64, but positions could be taken at the current market price. The trading target for DLTR is $72.

L Brands (LTD) rounds out our list of stocks that institutions hate right now. Don't feel bad if the name doesn't sound familiar; after unloading its namesake The Limited stores in the wake of the Great Recession, management picked the new name as a stopgap until it comes up with something better. Maybe that lackluster naming strategy is what's sending funds that own LTD running for the door. Funds sold 49 million shares of the firm in the first quarter, cutting their stake by more than half.

L Brands' crown jewel is Victoria's Secret. The store chain has a strong brand with celebrity exposure, it operates in the extremely high margin lingerie business, and it sports an economic moat for its trouble. As retailers continue to look for their ideal model, Victoria's Secret will continue to be it.

The firm's less entrenched brands, such as Bath & Body Works and Henri Bendel, don't sport the same level of an economic moat that Victoria's Secret does, but they've been buoyed by a stellar uptick in consumer spending in the last few quarters. As LTD looks for a new direction, investors can find some solace in the fact that management and investors are one in the same. Founder Leslie Wexner and his wife Abigail own a massive chunk of outstanding shares, keeping incentives skewed towards owners over than management.

Hefty margins and a big geographic footprint make LTD a solid way to gain retail exposure, even if the institutional investors don't agree.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Brian Gorban]

Fellow fast food giant Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) serves as a nice stock to diversify with one’s McDonald’s holding to take away company specific risk, and it is no slouch in size. Operating three very well-known restaurants (KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell) that in total comprised an even more impressive 38,000 restaurants as of November 29, 2012 and a market capitalization exceeding $30 billion, investors can feel comfortable that the company will continue to withstand the current economic recession. Add in the fact that the company sports a nice 2% dividend yield and with a very low 34% payout ratio, look for that dividend to continue to be raised.

Top 10 Retail Companies To Invest In Right Now: McDonald's Corporation(MCD)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By ETF_Authority]

McDonald’s Corporation (MCD), together with its subsidiaries, operates as a foodservice retailer worldwide. The company has raised distributions for 35 years in a row. The 10 year annual dividend growth rate is 26.50%/year. The last dividend increase was 14.75% to 70 cents/share. Analysts are expecting that McDonald's will earn $5.73/share in 2012. I expect that the quarterly dividend will reach 77 cents/share in 2012. Yield: 2.80%

  • [By JON C. OGG]

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD) is at $85.08 and analysts have a consensus price target objective of $97.68.  It carries a 2.9% dividend yield and the stock is down 5% from its 52-week high.  McDonald’s trades at close to 6-times book value, but its return on equity is 37%.  S&P carries an “A” local long-term rating on the Golden Arches.  In the “you gotta eat somewhere” theory, McDonald’s seems to keep winning over and over and its shares and same-store sales keep rising handily.

  • [By Martin]

The company is one of the world’s most recognized brands. The Golden Arches has locations all over the world. McDonald’s has managed to continually reinvent itself and its menu, and delivered strong shareholder returns in the process. However, it is lagging behind Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM) in China, which is a key market for growth. While the 10-year dividend growth rate is at 26%, I expect distribution growth over the next decade to average 10%.

  • [By Brian Gorban]

Fast food giant and world-renowned company McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) is undoubtedly a name you’ve heard of, as “the golden arches” are ubiquitous--and with good reason: The company operates over 33,000 restaurants in 119 countries. With over $27 billion in revenue and a market capitalization near $90 billion, McDonald’s is simply a juggernaut and should continue to be a beneficiary of the global growth story happening predominately in the “BRIC” (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries in the years and decades to come.

Of course, those countries have not been spared the current economic carnage and that has caused the company to miss the past two quarters’ consensus estimates, but that has created a buying opportunity. With the stock trading not far above its $83.31 52-week low, McDonald’s is now yielding an attractive 3.5% dividend yield, and with a low 54% payout ratio, look for the dividend to not only be safe but be raised in the near future. Add in the fact that the company has a comparatively and historically low 16x forward and trailing P/E, and I think MCD should serve investors well for the long-term while one can wait and happily collect the nice 3.5% dividend.

    Nearest Resistance: $6.50

    Nearest Support: $5.25

    Catalyst: Earnings Beat

It's a rare double-digit day for Groupon (GRPN) today -- at least as of this writing -- following an earnings beat for the first quarter of 2013. Groupon has been a perennial underperformer since its IPO in late 2011, and the 76% decline in the stock's price since going public is proof of that. But the 3 cents per share that the firm earned for the quarter bested investors' expectations, and that's all it took to spur a move higher in the stock.

It's a little too early to call today's price action the start of something. From a technical standpoint, today's 10% jump higher isn't particularly important -- shares are still sitting in between resistance at $6.50 and support down at $5.25. And with GRPN's price fading this afternoon, I wouldn't exactly recommend throwing money at this stock right now. Caveat emptor.
