Growth Factors this Past Quarter

Yahoo search business continues to show signs of improvement, even in the face of tough competition from Facebook, Google and Microsoft. Improvements on the display side are ongoing, although the impact is not apparent just yet.

However, under its new CEO Marissa Meyer, Yahoo has been active on the acquisition front. It acquired multiple start-ups mainly in the mobile space. The acquisitions are part of a strategy to broaden and strengthen Yahoo expertise in the mobile segment as adoption of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets continue to accelerate.

Anthem, which is owned by WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) , for example, required prior authorizations only 2.14% of the time. Cigna (NYSE: CI  ) and Aetna (NYSE: AET  ) have higher frequencies -- 4.74% and 5.42%, respectively. Humana (NYSE: HUM  ) is even higher, but still in the single digits with a 8.42% prior authorization rate. Of the publicly traded insurers, only UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) requires prior authorizations more than 10% of the time, with a rate of 12.43%.

Now, this isn't to say that there weren't individual exceptions last month. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) , for instance, was up by approximately 5% over the course of June. This has been a particularly hot sector of late given the ongoing developments in health care. As my colleague Dan Caplinger pointed out, last April, the government had to delay a central component of Obamacare. And this past week, it did the same with a second component -- to read more about this, check out Dan's take on it here. Both moves give insurance carriers like UnitedHealth more time to figure out how to comply with the legislative overhaul.

The reaction to the online marketplaces from some large insurers has been less than enthusiastic. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) CEO Stephen Hemsley indicated that his company would move forward somewhat cautiously. WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) also stated that it would only participate in 14 state exchanges initially.

The main culprits in the Dow's decline were IBM (IBM) down 6.4%, Goldman Sachs (GS), down 2.6%, and United Health Group (UNH) down 4.97%.

I think we saw two themes re-emerge, and one new theme emerge yesterday, that are likely to be major drivers of the US market for the next couple of weeks, as we move through the meat of earnings season.

In the following segment, health-care analysts David Williamson and Max Macaluso discuss Dow component Merck's (NYSE: MRK  ) portfolio of cholesterol-lowering drugs, and how an ongoing clinical study could lower sales of one of its most successful franchises.

We initiated a new position in Aircastle Ltd. (AYR), an aircraft leasing company with a flexible business model and a rational capital allocation philosophy. We took advantage of an opportunity to purchase shares in the heavily capitalized Georgia bank State Bank Financial Corp. (STBZ) as the depressed stock price reflected investorslack of patience with a slower than expected pace of capital deployment. We like State Bank management team led by Georgia banker Joe Evans. This management team has experience successfully building and selling other Georgia banks. We also received shares of transportation infrastructure company XPO Logistics, Inc. (XPO) as a result of its acquisition of holding Pacer International, Inc.
